12 Tons of KitKat Bars Stolen in Europe, Public Asked to Help
Thousands of KitKat Bars Stolen Across Europe, Public Urged to Help Track Them
In a rare confectionery heist, approximately 12 tons of KitKat bars – around 413,793 pieces – were reported stolen between Italy and Poland at the end of March. The truck carrying the chocolate bars vanished along with its cargo, and Nestlé has launched an urgent search.
The stolen KitKats are not the classic variety but special-edition, car-shaped bars created for a Formula 1 promotion. Nestlé has confirmed that each bar has a unique serial number, making it possible to trace any stolen bars that appear for sale. Officials say bars sold outside Europe, such as in the US, are unlikely to be affected.
To assist with the investigation, Nestlé introduced the Stolen KitKat Tracker on April 1. Members of the public can enter the 8-digit batch number from their candy at https://stolenkitkattracker.online/
to see if it matches the missing stock. The tracker provides step-by-step guidance on how to submit evidence if a match is found.
The unusual theft has also caught the attention of other brands, which have humorously referenced KitKat’s famous “Gimme a break” slogan on social media. Companies including Hostess Snacks, fashion platform Gilt, Task Rabbit, and Tide Laundry have all joined in with playful comments.
While the heist has sparked online jokes, Nestlé has stressed that the focus remains on locating the missing chocolate. Investigators and the company are appealing to anyone who may have information to come forward, hoping for a breakthrough in the case soon.
